Wrinkly Bits
A Blog by Gail Cushman
We are on the ship! Hurray! I love being on a ship, looking out over the sea, hoping to see some sea creature, which hardly ever happens, but nevertheless, one can always hope. I took my first cruise with my mother in 1996. She and I had always gotten along, but going on a cruise with your mother wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, for my first trip on a big boat, but it turned out to be one of my favorite things in the world. It gave me quality time with Field Marshal Von Emeline and spending quality time with your mother is always good. My father was sick and I had been diagnosed with cancer, so we had lots to talk about and I grew to know and appreciate her differently than I had before. We sailed to Alaska on the Inside Passage, watching whales, and icebergs, and drinking wine. Good times. She has been gone for many years, but that week was one to remember.
Now, for this week. We flew to Buenos Aires, Argentina…a whopping 15-hour flight and spent the next day trying to figure out what day and time it was. All the timepieces had different opinions, so we ignored them and relied on hunger pains to decide what time it was. We talked a lot and toured a bit. A clear day. We are now aboard the Oosterdam of the Holland America Line, which is my chosen cruise line. It has great itineraries, well-trained staff, and I’ve sailed with them enough that I can find my way around. And they have complimentary wine. Woo Hoo. It is a great dam ship.
We launched from Buenos Aires last night and this morning we woke up in Montevideo, Uruguay, on the Eastern coast of South America south of the equator the map says.
Cowboy was a little under the weather, so I’m tending to him, and made him see the ship doctor. Nothing serious, she said, just a touch of being on the north side of 80 and the south side of the equator. Or it might be the other way around. He is resting, something he does well, but I am not the patient wife, so he says. The Doc gave him antibiotics and electrolytes, and I am ready to go play, but alas, a couple of glasses of wine and back to my book editing for now. Doc says he will be up and running the decks and/or playing Pickleball tomorrow and all will be well. It is a “sea day” so we can sit and watch the waves go by.
We have to rethink things on a boat, but it’s all good fun. Cheers!
I’m trying to figure out how to post pics…so stay tuned…they are coming!
