I went outside to get my morning paper and it wasn’t there. Instead, I was met by a blast of heat, like a 365-degree oven that you open to pop potatoes in for baking. My phone thermometer read 88 degrees, which would be okay if I wanted to jump into the swimming pool, but this was about 5 a.m. and I don’t have a swimming pool.
We complain when it’s too hot and also when it’s too cold, and some hots are good and others not so good. Hot cakes are a positive, especially with a little syrup. Hot dogs fill the bill as summer treats, especially with a baseball game and a good mustard. Hot sauce makes everything a little better, but that comes from my Marine training, and I remember a Marine friend of Tom’s who put hot sauce on everything, include hot cakes, because, he said, sometimes even hot cakes need a little spice. He was a southern Marine, and his favorite vegetable was sliced cucumbers, fried in butter. Hot sauce might have improved them, too.
Hot water is good, and makes for clean hands, hair, bodies and clothes, but being in hot water is not so good and leads to all kinds of trouble. When I was teaching school, students sometimes hit my hot button and I would get a little hot under the collar, but then I would cool off and all would be well.
Being a hot shot or hot head are not generally positive attributes, while being a hottie can give one a sense pride, but I’m unsure of the whole hottie thing as I never reached above negative one on the hottie scale. I remember having the hots for a few people, who shall go unnamed, except for my handsome hottie Tom, who was my hot bed of happiness. I could elaborate on my list of hotties, but will mention only three: Tom Selleck, Mark Harmon, and Paul Newman. If I had room for a fourth in this blog, I would add Sam Elliot, but I don’t have room, so I’m omitting him.
Tom had some hotties, too, Sophia Loren, Ursula Andress, and Raquel Welch and a whole slew of James Bond’s women. He seldom talked about them, why would he? He had me.
This year, the heat is getting to me, and I am sure others feel the same way. We’ve had nearly two weeks of near or over 100-degree temperatures and it’s time to cool down before the hot month of August arrives. We have air conditioning, fans, and water to keep ourselves cool. Some are floating the Boise River or other waterways, a fun way to spend the day, but it’s important to stay cool, however we do it.
Just for fun, let’s add one more hottie: Robert Redford. He makes me smile.
