There are a lot of things that I do now that I didn’t do in the past, some are good, some not so good. This brilliant thought occurred to me when I woke up this morning—at 3 a.m. There I was, bright-eyed and bushy tailed, ready to go, thinking about my day’s adventures including facing my doctor for a routine check-up, knowing she’s gonna tell me to make an appointment for a mammogram (I wondered if either of those qualifies as an adventure), and of course, writing my inane Wrinkly Bitsthoughts. I used to rally at 7 a.m., like clockwork, which it was. On the positive note, my 3 a.m. wake-up time gives me four extra hours to think inane thoughts.
That’s just one example, but here are some others: I used to eat bananas, now not so much. I know they have potassium, which is a necessary nutrient, but they don’t taste like they used to, and they turn black before I can devour the whole bunch. If I buy only three days’ worth, I have to return to the store to buy more three days later. With COVID19, I’m not doing that.
I used to like hot sauce on everything, and it still tastes good, but a little later, maybe at 2 a.m., it’s not so good…maybe that’s what rallies me at 3…I hadn’t thought of that.
I used to go from one room to another with a purpose and could remember why I was headed there for the entire thirty seconds that it took me to arrive at my destination. Now I make several trips, which isn’t bad because I add many steps to my 10,000 steps routine before remembering that I wanted to remove a piece of toast from the toaster to munch on with my coffee.
I used to know what day it was, every day, but now my days seem to run together, meaning Sunday is identical to Wednesday, which closely resembles Friday. My favorite day has always been Monday because I got to start everything over. When I was teaching, every Monday was the first day of school, every single week. Now I know it’s Monday when my neighbors put their trash cans out.
On the positive side, I used to get through the entire week without a nap. But now, I have discovered the joy of napping…sometimes on the bed, sometimes on the couch, sometimes in a chair. Doesn’t matter, I can drift off almost anywhere…except in my bed at three in the morning.
