A few months ago, I sat on the “Forest Gump bench” in Savannah, Georgia, and pondered his “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’ll get,” quote and isn’t that the truth? This week somebody gave me a box of chocolates making me think about Forest and my trip to Savannah and a whole bunch of other random things.
I don’t eat much candy because I might as well paste it on my thighs, avoiding my digestive-system middleman and potential cavities, so I hadn’t even looked at candy in a long time. This box was very pretty, alluring and spoke to me, and I thought, “Why not? It’s been a long time.” It had its own safety lock system on it, a ribbon, followed by a wrapping, followed by a glued box top, followed by a plastic seal, followed by an interior seal, just in case I managed to pry open the first four safety precautions. I found a list of nutrients, none of which was healthy and, of course, a calorie count. I knew it would be bad, but it was worse than I had imagined, a hundred calories per bite. Yikes! But I trekked on and after just one more layer of paper, I gazed at a dozen temptations.
I stared at them pondering the pros and cons, and since I try to have a significant relationship with my bathroom scale (which undoubtedly is broken because it only moves in one direction) the cons overpowered the pros of tasting one of these beautiful treats. The box contained a guide to its contents, Tiramisu (Yummy), Birthday Cake (Meh), and Aztec Spice (no clue). I was about to close the lid, feeling quite proud that my Marine discipline was kicking in, until I saw the words “creme brûlée.” Be still my heart, because it is my favorite dessert, and here it was sitting in front of me, only a measly one hundred calories away. Temptation got the best of me, and I took a bite. Ahh, yes, it was delectable, nearly an erotic experience as I let it melt in my mouth. It had been a long time and I did enjoy it.
Enough about me and my sensual candy fetish. Back to Forest Gump.
I agree with Forest, life is like a box of chocolates, and it’s good to try every morsel that comes my way…literally and figuratively. An adventure to the unknown might be scary or risky or exciting or break my heart, but it’s part of life and I for one, am up for it. One hundred calories or not.
